Jos: Nigeria’s Cool Climate City and Fruit Basket

I have lived in Northern Nigeria for a long time, so visiting Jos was something I always expected to do eventually. Jos is the capital city of Plateau State, and one thing everyone commonly associates with Jos is its cold weather. The moment you enter the state, you can immediately feel the difference in temperature compared to many other northern cities.

During my visit, I stayed at Valada Hotel and Resorts Ltd — a quiet and comfortable place that provided a peaceful environment after long days of exploration. Jos itself has a calm and relaxed atmosphere that makes it feel different from many busy Nigerian cities.

Exploring the Farms: The Fruit Basket of the Nation

Jos has long been known as the “fruit basket of the nation,” so my first destination was the farms.
Unlike many other states in Nigeria, Plateau’s climate supports crops that are not commonly grown elsewhere. In Jos, farms produce fruits such as apples, strawberries, grapes, and other temperate crops.

Walking through the farms and seeing these fruits growing naturally in Nigeria was a unique experience. Tasting some of the fresh fruits directly from the farms made the visit even more enjoyable. It was refreshing to see agriculture thriving in such a different way compared to other regions.

Visit to Jos Wildlife Park

From the farms, we went straight to the Jos Wildlife Park.
The park is considered one of Nigeria’s largest zoological gardens and is home to various wild animals and natural habitats.

Exploring the park after the farm visit added another dimension to the trip — combining nature, wildlife, and open landscapes in one day. The wide space and natural environment of the park make it a relaxing place for visitors.

Local Street Food Experience

After a long day of movement, I returned to my hotel to rest before trying some of Jos’s local street food for dinner. I had foods like:

  • masa
  • fura da nono
  • fried Irish potatoes

These local foods added a cultural touch to the visit and made the experience feel more connected to everyday life in Jos.

Safety Awareness While Visiting Jos

Jos is generally calm and peaceful, and many parts of the city feel safe and welcoming. However, like some other regions in Northern Nigeria, there are security concerns in certain areas due to past conflicts and bandit activities.

Because of this, it is important for visitors to:

  • know the exact area they are going
  • avoid unfamiliar locations alone
  • move with locals or guides when possible
  • stay observant

Travel awareness helps ensure a safer and more enjoyable visit.

A Memorable Northern Experience

Overall, my visit to Jos was refreshing and memorable. From the cool climate and fruit farms to wildlife exploration and local food, the experience felt different from other northern cities I have visited.

Jos remains one of Nigeria’s most unique destinations — a place of cooler weather, agricultural richness, and natural attractions. It is definitely a location I would gladly visit again.
